The Victorian Women’s Participation in Local Government Coalition has received a Women in Leadership grant from the Victorian Government to undertake a project to recognize and build local government achievements in gender equity, diversity and active citizenship - the 3 principles of the Victorian Local Government Women's Charter.

The National Steering Committee has been overwhelmed by the support received from councils and organisations across Australia as more and more sign up to be Partners in the initiative. Over 60 councils and organisations have become a Gold, Silver or Bronze Partner which amounts to over $65,000 in much needed funds to support the program.

The Hon. Anthony Albanese MP, Minister for Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Local Government called for all Australian councils and shires to better reflect the communities they seek to represent when he officially launched the 2010 Year of Women in Local Government in Sydney on Wednesday, 20 January 2010.
Speaking from the Sydney Town Hall, Minister Albanese said local governments, as the level closest to the community, make an important contribution to the nation, delivering vital infrastructure and human services.

Over the next 18 months these ambassadors will undertake the role of champions and role models for the advancement of women in Local Government and will each make a valuable contribution to the success of the Year of Women in Local Government 2010.
